Why Oral Hygiene is Important When You Have Invisalign

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a series of custom-made, clear aligners designed to straighten your teeth. They can be removed for eating, brushing teeth, and other daily activities. Drs. David A. Burkhart and James W. Goudy created the Invisalign system in 1996 and it has been used worldwide ever since as an alternative to traditional metal braces. Invisalign has helped many people with crooked or crowded teeth achieve a beautiful smile without having to wear metal braces.

What’s the best way to care for your teeth while wearing Invisalign?

Professional dental care is essential to maintain the health of your teeth and gums. However, you must care for your teeth and aligners daily. If your wear your aligners without cleaning thoroughly, the food particles will be stuck on the teeth for hours. If food and bacteria accumulate in the trays, you will be more susceptible to cavities, gum disease, bad breath and tooth discolouration.

Brushing should happen at least three times daily and flossing once a day. This will minimise plaque and stop food from becoming trapped in the aligners. If you can’t brush your teeth, rinse your mouth with water before reseating your aligners. Also, visit an oral health therapist for a thorough cleaning every six months and follow your dentist’s Invisalign prescription to the letter.

How do I care for my Invisalign aligners?

When brushing your teeth, you should also clean your aligners. Use the specific effervescent tablets recommended by your dentist for proper cleaning. Brushing your aligners with a soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste is also possible.

To get the most out of your Invisalign treatment, you must maintain good oral health habits daily and look after your aligners. If you have any questions, please speak to one of our dentists or oral health therapists for further advice.
