What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a metal fixture similar to a screw, which is placed into the jawbone. It creates a base to attach either a single false tooth or a set of false teeth.

Implants are made of commercially and medically pure titanium. This material is not known to cause any type of rejection.

What are the advantages of implants?

Dental implants provide a number of benefits.

  • They are a long-term solution to tooth loss
  • Help retain your natural face shape, and smile
  • Improve your appearance
  • Can improve functionality by replacing missing teeth

Can anyone have a dental implant?

To be considered a good candidate for a dental implant you must:

  • Be in good physical health
  • Have optimal oral health, free of periodontal disease (gum disease)
  • Have enough bone in the area of his or her missing teeth for the implant to be attached too

However certain factors, such as diabetes, smoking, bleeding disorders and certain medications may influence the procedure and outcome of the treatment. Our dentists can advise you if dental implants are a good option for you.

The Professional Partnership

Dental implant treatment is a complex and multi-stage treatment designed to provide a long-term, functional and aesthetic replacement for a lost tooth or teeth.

Our practices two decades of experience has lead us to the strong opinion that for optimal results a partnered service is required between a specialised implant surgeon and a restorative dentist.

As our primary interest is in providing our clients with the best possible outcome, we only use surgeons with specific training and experience in bone and soft tissue management as it relates to the placement of dental implants. We can then focus our skills, training and experience on creating beautiful, aesthetic and functional artificial teeth on those expertly placed implants.

Whether they are crowns, bridges, full arch reconstructions or removable dentures attached to implants we believe that this team approach is most desirable as it provides the best surgical and dental results for our clients.

The Treatment Process With Us

Dental implant treatment involves significant treatment planning and usually a minimum of three appointments with us in addition to appointments with an implant surgeon.

A typical schedule would be:

Appointment 1: Pre-Treatment Records

This is a short appointment for initial impressions, photographs, colour selections and other required tests to set up the process of completing the dental implant.

Following this appointment we would arrange for you to see the implant surgeon who will assess your case. The surgeon would discuss your case with us then arrange for an appointment for your implant surgery. The surgical part of your implant treatment will be managed by your implant surgeon who will then refer you back to us for construction of the crown/bridge portion of your implant.

Appointment 2: Preparation and Final Records

This is generally a longer appointment where the Implant is checked and impressions are taken on in order for the laboratory to construct a Crown/Bridge to be attached to your Implant. Usually no temporary will be required or you will already have a temporary denture. All information is now collected together and dispatched to the dental laboratory which will be responsible for constructing your crown/bridge on the appropriate Implant components. It will take approximately three weeks to produce the final crown/bridge complex.

Appointment 3: Insertion and Completion

This is usually a short appointment where  the final crown/bridge complex is placed to review colour, accuracy and comfort. If all satisfactory the crown/bridge is cemented in place.
